ON THE THEORETICAL FOUNDATIONS OF CONTRASTIVE STYLISTIC GLOTTOMETRY IN TRANSLATION STUDIES

Abstract

This text describes the theoretical foundations of comparative stylistic glottometry as an interdisciplinary tool for contrastive study of original literary texts and their translations. To achieve this objective, the study rests on three theoretical premises. The first is Miroslav Yanakiev's glotometric stylistics, which pursues accuracy in stylistic analysis through measurement. The second is the "extended model" of comparative study by Andrey Danchev, which includes the systemic, functional, and textual aspects. According to this approach, we compare not only isolated units, but also their systemic relationships, functions in the text, and their overall distribution. The third premise is the paradigmatic concept of the Slovak linguist Ján Findra, according to which all stylemes are arranged in a single macro-paradigmatic system, consisting of two large opposing areas: the unmarked, notional, neutral stylemes — the stylistic background, the "zero level" of style; and the marked, expressive-emotional, stylistically marked stylemes — the stylèmes that carry a distinct stylistic value. This comparative stylistic glottometry is situated in translation studies and linked to the concepts of equivalence and adequacy in literary translation.
