OBSERVATIONS ON THE LITURGICAL TERMINOLOGY FROM A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE. DESIGNATIONS OF LITURGICAL UTENSILS AND APPURTENANCES

Abstract

The examination of the lexico-semantic group “Designations of church vessels” is based mainly on liturgical and paraliturgical texts (mystagogical commentaries) covering a broad temporal spectrum - from the earliest written records in Old Bulgarian such as Euchologium Sinaiticum and Sinai Service Book of the 11th century to St. Euthymius’s translations of liturgical texts of the time of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom (14th century) down to Church Slavonic records of the National Revival period. Separate articles deal with particular realia and their designations. After a brief explanation about each of the liturgical vessels and its symbolic interpretation in the mystagogical works illustrated by numerous examples from the written records under examination, the researcher analyzes the methods of terminological nomination and the paradigmatic and syntactical relations characteristic of the respective word in the language (polysemy, synonymy, terminological homonymy, combin ability). The article examines the special vocabulary of the field of liturgy from a historical perspective, focusing on the names of church utensils, a collective name for the various vessels used in the liturgical practice of the Church. A large part of them are identical to objects used for the corresponding activity in the daily life of a person. This also reflects on their nomination in the language, for which a new name is usually not produced, but what is available in everyday speech is absorbed. Other vessels were created specifically for the liturgical practice in the Church and are fully tailored to its needs and requirements. They are most often named with names specific only to them, some of which are borrowed from or through the Greek language or are copies forged according to a foreign model. For all these objects, various symbolic explanations are offered in the medieval written monu ments that have reached us, depending on the time and place of their use in Christian worship.
